PM Narendra Modi to Meet Chief Ministers in Delhi Today

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair a meeting of Chief Ministers in the national capital today to discuss the structure, scope and role of the new body that will replace the Planning Commission.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will skip the meeting amidst the ongoing stand-off between the BJP and Trinamool Congress over several issues. She is likely to send state Finance minister Amit Mitra as the state government’s representative to attend the meeting instead.

“There is no scheduled Delhi visit”, a West Bengal Secretariat official said when asked about Ms Banerjee’s Delhi visit.

Though no reason was officially cited, he said Ms Banerjee is scheduled to leave on Monday on a two-day tour infrastructure-cum-promiton trip to Jharkhali/Sajnekhali/Sunderbans.

She was, however, criticised by the BJP for the decision. “The meeting (of chief ministers) is development-oriented. Mr Modi believes India will develop only when its states develop. She should respect our federal structure and participate in the meeting forgetting party politics,” said BJP Secretary Shrikant Sharma.

The Chief Minister had recently urged the Opposition parties to unite against the Narendra Modi government in Parliament.

“The Trinamool Congress is playing the role of main opposition in Delhi. That is why they are targeting us. Those in power in Delhi . But they cannot sweep us away with brooms,” she had told a party workers’ meeting recently. She had also accused the Modi government of “trying to sell out the country.”

Congress Unchanged. Gandhis’ Offer to Resign Rejected

After the Congress’ colossal defeat in the national election, its top two leaders, Sonia and Rahul Gandhi offered today to resign as president and vice-president, but their colleagues rejected the proposal immediately.

Despite being saddled with its worst result ever after a campaign that was fronted by Mr Gandhi, the party’s highest-decision making body adopted “a unanimous resolution expressing full faith” in the 43-year-old and his mother.

“They are the best leadership we have,” said Amarinder Singh after the meeting. Both Mrs Gandhi and the Prime Minister took responsibility for the defeat, with Dr Manmohan Singh reportedly ceding that the party did not “tackle effectively enough” the country’s frustration with inflation or corruption. While declaring that “resignations are not the solution”, the PM reportedly said to Mrs Gandhi, “As head of government, I have to take responsibility, not you.”

Mr Gandhi, according to sources, said the party “does not have the accountability that it should have. I hold myself accountable.” On Friday, while publicly acknowledging his role in the party’s debacle, Mr Gandhi had smiled though his short statement, creating a pop-up controversy.

The Congress won just 44 of Parliament’s 543 seats, while the BJP, powered by Narendra Modi, amassed the strongest result by a party in nearly 30 years, landing a parliamentary majority.

The Congress Working Committee has now entrusted Mrs Gandhi to developing a road-map for change; she has also been authorised to reshuffle key posts. The gesture is a return to the undisputed centre-stage for the 67-year-old after a lacklustre attempt by her son and his advisors to take charge.

Kamal Nath, the most senior Congress parliamentarian, told NDTV on Sunday that only internal democracy could end “the culture of patronage” and elections must be held to select the 40-odd members of Working Committee.

Mr Modi has been camped in Delhi for the past two days holding multiple meetings to finalise the names of people to join his cabinet.

On Tuesday, the BJP’s 282 Lok Sabha MPs will elect him their leader. That will be followed by a meeting of the NDA which will choose Mr Modi as the alliance’s leader.

Mr Modi will then lead the NDA to the President to stake claim. His party, the BJP has won 336 of the 543 seats in the Lok Sabha with its allies.

He will return to Gujarat on Tuesday for a public meeting in his assembly constituency Maninagar and tell the voters that he would be resigning and moving on to Delhi.

The following day, Mr Modi will be felicitated by the BJP legislators in the assembly which is meeting for a special session. Mr Modi will then pave way for the party MLAs to elect their next chief minister by resigning from the Maninagar seat.

The BJP has sent party observers to supervise the change of guard – sources say Anandi Ben is the top contender to take over the chief minister’s post which Mr Modi has held since October 2001.

Website releases photos of Modi with woman

NEW DELHI: Gulail, the investigative website which released tapes of purported conversations between Narendra Modi’s aide Amit Shah and suspended Gujarat police officer G L Singhal to allege that the state government had subjected a young woman to illegal surveillance, on Thursday released photographs to seek to establish that the woman had known the Gujarat CM at least since 2005.

Gulail uploaded a dozen pictures of Modi’s presence at the first edition of ‘Kutch Sharad Utsav’ in October 2005. In one of the pictures, Modi is engaged in animated conversation with IAS officer Pradeep Sharma and the woman with her face partially masked.

As per the recordings of the purported conversations between Shah and Singhal, the state police mounted an aggressive surveillance on the woman, introduced by the website as Madhuri (not her real name), in 2009 at the instance of “sahib”. She was tracked in gyms, at the airport, in aircraft and even in hospital where her mother was admitted.

“These pictures raise a serious question mark about the credibility of the explanation put forth both by Madhuri’s father Premlal Soni and the BJP that only Premlal was known to Modi and it was he who had requested the CM to ‘take care’ of his daughter in 2009 when the illegal snooping operation was mounted. The pictures show that Modi knew Madhuri for at least five years before his state machinery mounted an illegal round the clock vigil on the young woman in August 2009. It also confirms that part of the affidavit filed by Sharma in the Supreme Court in which he had alleged that Madhuri had visited Modi when he came to inaugurate the ‘Sharad Utsav’ in October 2005. Sharma served as the collector of Kutch district between 2003 and 2005,” the website said in a statement.

The website has refrained from attesting to the veracity of the conversations.

Sharma had in May 2011 told the Supreme Court in an affidavit he had introduced Madhuri to Modi when he visited Kutch to inaugurate the hill garden project. Later, Modi and Madhuri started exchanging emails and text messages, Sharma said in his filing.

Sharma has alleged that one of the key reasons why he fell out of favour with Modi, and was later subjected to harassment, was because he was aware of Modi’s proximity to the woman. Sharma moved the Supreme Court last week demanding a CBI inquiry into the illegal surveillance.

Sharma has in his application claimed that he was victimised because of his “knowledge of the intimacy shared by Shri Narendra Modi with a young lady architect, aged 27 years, from Bangalore, but originally from Bhuj in Gujarat, who was introduced to Shri Modi by the applicant himself in the year 2004”.

“The said tapes/transcripts reveal a strong bias and prejudice of the state of Gujarat against the applicant herein and the state’s intent to somehow implicate the applicant herein in criminal offences,” the application has said.

Narendra Modi completes 12 years as Gujarat CM today

Ahmedabad, Oct 7: Narendra Modi will on Monday become the first Chief Minister of Gujarat to complete 12 years of continuous rule, during which he not only hard-sold ‘Gujarat model of development’ but also got himself nominated as BJP’s prime ministerial candidate for 2014 elections.

“This is a record…No Chief Minister has served continuously for 12 years,” according to a government release.

Modi, who started as a vendor serving tea to customers at a railway station in Gujarat, has come a long way in politics after he joined RSS as a pracharak and later became associated with BJP.

Modi had taken over the reins from his predecessor Keshubhai Patel in 2001 and since then has led his party, the BJP, to score three consecutive electoral victories, almost pushing the opposition to fringe.

No Chief Minister has served continuously for 12 years

The 63-year-old leader was last month anointed as the prime ministerial candidate of BJP for 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

“In the last 12 years, Gujarat has showcased and implemented the policy of development to all and appeasement to none,” a media statement issued by the state information department said.

“Gujarat has emerged as a growth engine of the country. The state has become a role model of development for other states as well as for developing countries,” the statement said.

It listed various schemes implemented by the Modi government in the last 12 years.

Though 2002 communal riots–wherein more than 1,000 members of a minority community died–are widely viewed as a blot on Modi regime for its alleged bias in reining in the violence, the Chief Minister got a clean chit from the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT).

No major riots were reported after 2002 in Gujarat.

“Chief Minister Modi has demonstrated how to face challenges and come out of them successfully. He has converted adversities into opportunities,” the statement said.

New Delhi, Oct 2: It’s just been a few days since Delhi got ‘Modi’fyed and here it goes all over again. The Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi will attend a students’ competition here on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti on October 02, just days after addressing a mass rally in the national capital.

More than 84% wanted to listen to the Gujarat CM

Modi is scheduled to spend the entire day at an event organised by Manthan, one of the India’s biggest youth movements launched only on July 25, 2013 which aims to set the agenda for the 2014 General Elections. Manthan is being organised by Citizens for Accountable Governance (CAG), a not-for-profit organisation.

More than 7,000 students from over 200 colleges are set to take part in the event at Thyagaraj Sports Complex. The movement encouraged college students to come up with innovative solutions to 14 most crucial challenges facing India today. Over 20,000 students from over 700 colleges spread across 250 cities participated.

The adjudication happened using a two-pronged approach. Over 5 lakh students voted on the Manthan website to select the best ideas and at the same time over 50 experts from various fields provided their inputs. The top 3 ideas from each theme have been selected.

This event will help Modi, who is being promoted as youth icon, connect with a students’ movement ahead of the crucial General Election.

Modi was invited as the speaker for the finale after Manthan conducted a survey where more than 84% out of the 5,722 respondents wanted to listen to the Gujarat CM

BJP inching closer to naming Narendra Modi as PM candidate

NEW DELHI: The BJP on Thursday appeared to be inching closer towards an announcement of Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi as its prime ministerial candidate even as efforts continued by party chief Rajnath Singh to bring on board leaders who want the decision to be deferred till the assembly polls.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) sources said that the decision on Modi’s elevation would be announced “soon” and could happen on Friday.

Rajnath Singh said that all senior leaders were being consulted on the issue and sought to downplay reservations of senior party leader LK Advani on declaring Modi as prime ministerial candidate.

“No one is miffed with anyone. ..We will decide after talking to everyone and will make the announcement at the appropriate time,” Rajnath Singh told reporters here.

Earlier, former Bihar deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi made a veiled criticism of Advani.

“Advaniji has failed to gauge the public mood. Advaniji himself declared Atalji as PM candidate. Now also he could have done the same for Namo (Narendra Modi),” Sushil Modi tweeted on Wednesday night.

Party sources said that apart from Advani, Sushma Swaraj, the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha, also wants the decision on projecting Modi to be deferred till assembly polls to five sates later this year.

Narendra Modi is the chief of party’s campaign committee for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

GVL Narasimha Rao, a member of BJP’s national executive, said the party leadership was trying to reach a consensus and admitted there were leaders who did not favour Modi.

However, he indicated that the party was willing to make the announcement despite the reservations of these leaders.

“Hope there is consensus in parliamentary board. If not, the majority decision will prevail,” Narasimha Rao said.

Party sources said Rajnath Singh met Sushma Swaraj in a bid to pave the way for the announcement.

He had earlier met Advani and party leader Murli Manohar Joshi.

BJP has maintained that a decision on prime ministerial candidate would be taken by the parliamentary board.

Party sources said a meeting of the parliamentary board may be convened on Friday. They said Rajnath Singh may also decide to make an announcement on Narendra Modi after consulting members of the board individually.

“What the party would be doing tomorrow is only formalising a decision taken,” a party leader said.

Those pushing for Narendra Modi’s elevation as prime ministerial candidate feel that it will help build momentum against the Congress and help crystallise people’s mood in favour of the party.

But Sudheendra Kulkarni, who was close to former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee besides Advani, on Thursday accused Narendra Modi of polarising his own party and questioned his ability to head a stable central government.

“A socially polarising leader has polarised his own party. Can he run a smooth, stable and effective government at the centre? Think seriously,” he tweeted.

Narendra Modi’s special wish and message on Teacher’s Day

New Delhi, Sept 5: India celebrates teacher’s day on Sept 5 showing gratitude and appreciation to all teachers.
