Thirty seven per cent believe that he is the biggest brand in Bollywood today. Leagues ahead of the current crop of actors, which include Shah Rukh Khan (14 per cent), who propelled the brand wave in the nineties to the new-age turk Ranbir Kapoor (8 per cent).

Ask what makes Bachchan special during the survey, and qualities like Talented (18 %t), Excellent at his craft (12 %), Intelligence (11 %), Hard working (8 %) and Versatile (6 %) were attributed to him.

Amitabh Bachchan has won four National Awards, which includes Best Newcomer — Saat Hindustani (1970) and three for Best Actor – Agneepath (1190), Black (2005) and Paa (2009).

Screen Survery 2013: Shah Rukh Khan at No. 2

What sets Brand shah Rukh Khan apart from the rest, according to the survey, are qualities like being Articulate (18%), Passionate (16%), Intelligence (10%), Hardworking (9%) and Fitness (8%). He also scores high on Wit (7%) among the actors. They also see a streak of the Maverick (2%) in him.

As much as he’s in the spotlight for his various ventures, the actor has also seen biggest failures (Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani, Asoka) and the biggest hits (Om Shanti Om and Chennai Express) in film-making as well as cricket, where his team was derided for poor on-field performance for three seasons till it picked up in the fourth.

Aditya Chopra’s film Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995), which starred Shah Rukh Khan opposite Kajol, is said to be biggest grosser in Indian film and the longest running film in the history of Indian cinema. It’s still screened at Maratha Mandir.

Dil Se, his film with Mani Ratnam, became the first Indian film to enter the UK top ten at the box-office.

Screen Survery 2013: Salman Khan at No. 3, scores on his charisma

12 per cent in the Screen Annual Survey 2013 rate him as the third biggest brand in Bollywood, three steps ahead of even his buddy, Aamir Khan (9%).

What seem to work for Salman are qualities like fitness (37%), energy (12%), bold (7%), good looks and charm (7%) and social awareness (6%).

While he remains the undisputed ‘Bod’ of Bollywood (37%), he is also seen as a man who works hard (4%), is intelligent (4%) and takes risks (3%).

He’s unapologetic about the kind of films he works in, which are typical masala fare. And yet, 16 per cent see the actor as the third best ambassador to represent Bollywood on a global platform, two steps ahead of Aamir Khan again.

Being Human fashion range and tie-ups with several companies have only gone on to seal his appeal with the masses, who love to flaunt a Being Human tee.

While he, Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan are the only ones to score on charisma, Salman Khan is also seen to be some kind of maverick.

He features in four of the highest grossers Hindi films of all-time — Maine Pyar Kiya (1989), Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) and Dabangg (2011).

Screen Survey 2013: Katrina Kaif is the woman on top

The question of Screen Annual Survey 2013 in this category was which living actress of Hindi cinema has the biggest brand value, and the results pegged the dazzling Katrina Kaif on top with 26 per cent votes in her favour.

The actress has built her brand slowly and steadily. Despite a disastrous start with Boom and a poor command over Hindi, Katrina Kaif got noticed for her glamour quotient as the leading lady in Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya and Humko Deewana Kar Gaye.

Katrina Kaif soon found her a footing in Bollywood with several hits like Namaste London, Partner, Race and Singh Is Kingg.

However, it was with Kabir Khan’s New York that the actress got noticed for her acting skills, something she followed up with films like Raajneeti, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Jab Tak Hain Jaan.

Though the reviews to her acting ability have been mixed, Katrina Kaif’s intriguing mix of beauty, energy, hard work and dedication have established her as a brand to reckon with. Couple this with the fact that she is one of the most-in-demand face for several multinational brands like Panasonic, Pantene, Titan which has made a formidable brand that she is. Kaif is also an inspiration for several wannabes from all over the world, who dream of Bollywood as their destination.

Screen Survey 2013: Kareena Kapoor Khan is the reigning princess

The talented Kareena Kapoor Khan was second in the line of the living actress with the biggest brand value category.

Single or married, Kareena Kapoor Khan is unarguably India’s biggest female star and actor.

So what contributes to Kareena’s brand value? Understandably it is her illustrious lineage, her natural acting skills and her impressive body of work, which includes playing a variety of characters in different genres —from romantic comedies (Jab We Met) to historical dramas (Asoka) to action thrillers (Agent Vinod) to comedy (Golmaal 3).

So despite certain setbacks in her career with films like Mujhse Dosti Karoge and Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon, Kapoor who reinvented herself with Chameli, Yuva, Dev, Fida, Omkara, Heroine quickly established herself as a top actress.

Screen Survey 2013: Karan Johar is top director

From candy-floss flicks like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai to a family drama like Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham to the dramatic My Name Is Khan to the breezy Student Of The Year, Karan Johar has helmed every genre of films with finesse. In fact his Kuch Kuch Hota Hai ranks fourth as a film with the highest brand recall over the last 100 years. His presence on the social networking sites has also enhanced his brand value as has his presence on television shows, which like 84 per cent voters say, adds brand value to a film personality. And it came as no surprise that he topped the Screen Annual Survey 2013 in the living director/producer with the highest brand value. Johar, who has reinvented himself with every film, now stands tall as the top director/producer with 14 per cent votes.

Screen Survey 2013: Rohit Shetty at 2nd

Close on his heels with 13 per cent votes is Rohit Shetty. A pleasant surprise as Shetty is not exactly known to be a favourite with critics, who generally label his films like the Golmaal series as no-brainers. But the director, who is now synonymous with taking the audience on a joy ride of rib-tickling comedy and high octane action. His action comedies has made him an audience favourite. His latest Chennai Express where he teamed up with Shah Rukh Khan for the first time has broken all box-office records, which clearly explains the clout he enjoys.

Rajkumar Hirani is said to be the modern-day Hrishikesh Mukherjee with his simple stories and quaint brand of humour in films 3 Idiots and the Munnabhai series. He has often proved that funny does not have to be low-brow. Hirani’s penchant for sugar-coating social messages has struck an unbreakable chord with the audience and gets 11 per cent votes.

It’s not surprising that new-age director Anurag Kashyap with his dark and gritty films like Dev D and Gangs Of Wasseypur has made a deep impact. Kashyap ranks fourth in the survey with nine per cent votes, just a notch higher than Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra. The latter, who’s synonymous with patriotic, real life stories like Rang De Basanti and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag gets 8 per cent votes.

Other film-makers, who made it to the list for creating a strong brand connect with cinegoers are Mahesh Bhatt (7 %), Aditya Chopra (7 %), Farhan Akhtar (6 %), Sanjay Leela Bhansali (4 %), Ram Gopal Varma (4 %) and Ashutosh Gowarikar (3 %) — in that order.
